Why Massage And Chiropractic Work Go Hand-in-Hand

We might think of the spine and the muscle system of the human body as two separate parts of the body, but both are inextricably linked to each other. Without the spine working optimally, the muscles work harder. And if the muscles can’t count on the spine to do its job, they’re never able to function their best.

Restoring motion is a three-part process:

  • Realigning the musculoskeletal system (the muscles and bones).
  • Improve range of motion and flexibility.
  • Addressing muscle imbalances with targeted exercise.

Targeted massage performed by a qualified massage therapist, coupled with chiropractic care to realign the skeletal system lay the foundation for movement that you may have thought was lost.

Correcting Kinks in the Kinetic Chain

The first step to regaining movement that’s been lost due to an accident or due to wear-and-tear is to “unglue” the parts of the body that have become adhered to each other.

Just about every injury to muscle, from strains and tears, to overexertion and even surgery result in physical adhesions to the muscle fibers. These adhesions, known as “trigger points” or “knots,” are places in the body where the muscle has become stuck to the muscle around it. If you’ve had them before, you know that not only do they cause discomfort, they’re one of the main causes of lost range of motion.

The reason massage and chiropractic care are often prescribed together is that they complement each other. Where either is good by itself, taken together, massage and chiropractic adjustments are the lock and key that open the door to the path to revitalized movement.

Similar to how a chiropractic adjustment may restore range of motion in the spine, massage creates space for the muscles to move freely. In turn, the increased mobility allows the body to regain flexibility, which then allows us to fix the root of the problems for most people – postural issues or muscle imbalances,

The Goal Is Movement

Because muscle adhesions and lost mobility in the spine are likely the last effects of chronic or acute injury, they are the first thing that needs to be addressed whenever we try to get our bodies back to where they were.

With a strategic approach that begins with chiropractic care and massage, anybody can take back lost motion and create sustainable, rehabilitative movement.
